Biography

After majoring in International Relations at the University of Southern California, Dr. Haakenson attended the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. She completed her OBGYN residency at the University of Utah Hospital and Clinics in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dr. Haakenson lives with her husband Colin, a middle school teacher, and their four children (ages 5-16). When not at work, she can be found running, hiking, boating or attending a variety of sports activities with her kids.

I have always wanted to work in improving women’s lives and opportunities. I came to medicine in particular after working with HIV projects in Zimbabwe and Thailand focused on women and pregnancy. The OBGYNs I worked with in those settings changed lives. Working to create equity and inclusion for women in healthcare is very important to me. I am often the only person a woman feels comfortable discussing intimate and vulnerable parts of her life with. In my role, listening and providing comfort and assurance of a plan can transform a woman’s view of her future.
